There are three things that the House of Lords particularly enjoys debating: sex, furry animals and itself. And the absolute favorite is the last of those.
Today there was a time-limited debate on a Question for Short Debate tabled by Lord Philip Hunt (Labour’s Lords’ Deputy Leader) asking the Government, in the context of House of Lords reform, what is its view on the purpose of the House. The debate was scheduled for no more than 90 minutes and after the time alloted to the opening and closing speakers this left just two minutes for each of the other 23 speakers.
Result: fast-talking and concise points (a bit of a novelty for colleagues) – the Lords equivalent of speed-dating.
