Walter, pity you do not appreciate the works of fine public servants, I fear your apology might just possibly be undervalued therefore.

Well Walter, perhaps you should ask the Cecils or others whom nouveau libertairyairians and Tories recall as having greater weight why they didn't take up Walthamstow:

After all they conquored it much the same as almost everywhere else.

Well, Lord Harris, why did you not make that argument to the Garter? That you are very proud of the entire history of Haringey and did not want to be seen to favour one part of it over another? If you had been allowed to call yourself Hornsey, Wood Green and Tottenham (yes after the parliamentary boundaries) would not those not mentioned in that mouthful have felt 'left out'?

Let us come to the point. Why did you deem it necessary to make and *publish* a negative comment about one part of the Borough to make your point?

Whether you have respect for our rich Harringay history or not, you have made a public statement that reflects negatively on the neighbourhood and causes offence.

@Quietzapple yes sadly , Walthamstow has also closed. Would a peer refuse that name because the place still makes people think of the race track? Would a local politician from E17 publish for all to see his or her reasons for not being Lord/Lady X of Walthamstow because it not really really "fitting for a Life Peer to be called after a greyhound stadium?" I wonder...

My objective was to be called after Haringey borough - not one particular part.

I used the argument that I thought would hold most sway with Garter - it was not one that I personally agree with. I have the greatest respect for Harringay's history. Just as I do for that of Hornsey - a settlement since Saxon times. Or Tottenham with a history going back over a thousand years. Or Highgate. Or Wood Green.

However, your reaction rather illustrates my point. If I had appeared to favour one area of the Borough over the others, there would have been resentment. I wanted to show respect to the whole Borough and all of its constituent parts - not just one.

Sadly Walter, Walthamstow Greyhound Stadium has closed.

Handsome building, many would have given still more to become Lord o' Walthamstow Greyhound Stadium . . .

I'm confused.
Your response to Hugh suggests that it was the Garter who raised the objection but your account of the original conversation has *you* saying that the name of Harringay is associated with a Supermarket and a Greyhound stadium (can't see the problem with the latter - are there no peers of Walthamstow?) in order to get your own way on the name.

What a shame, Lord Harris, that you had not troubled to read the excellent Wikipedia article on Harringay http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Harringay

Had you opted for Harringay you would have found your name linked to Saxon chieftains; the magnificent art collection of Edward Grey of Harringay House; a beautiful Victorian listed building, the Salisbury Hotel; the Harringay Arena that saw visits from Paul Robeson, Clement Atlee, Alicia Markova among others; Finsbury Park, the oldest in London;...oh and a much referenced and award winning social network Harringay Online.

We are very proud of our local heritage and would have welcomed a Harringay Peer. How disappointing to be so summarily dismissed...and perhaps a little offended after all.

I delivered Red Ken's leaflets in Hornsey and in an unidentified (to me) part of Haringey last year.

I still have pics of the hail, wide angle lens off course . . .

Spurs new manager says Liddypool will be hard to beat:

Will you stand for election to the Lords if they remove the hereditaries and then make it 90% elected, or do you think PM Miliband will favour you?

The only people likely to be offended are those with an irony by-pass.

The joke is on those - the feudal functionaries - who are so snobbish as to be offended by a Sainsbury's superstore or by a greyhound stadium.

That's not me - or, I assume, Hugh.
